Many say that food is a reflection of lifestyle and cultural history. This is particularly true of Jeju food.
In the past, Jeju women and especially haenyeo, or women divers, lived very busy lives. As a result, they cooked with minimal seasoning, and were not that concerned about the taste.
According to local traditional food expert Yang Yong Jin, that characteristic has carried over to today. “Jeju foods were made out of necessity and they had functionality. However, if we learn the stories behind them, the food will be more enjoyable.”
Here are some of Jeju’s indigenous local foods JejuOlle walkers can enjoy. <Jeju Weekly>
