Jeju Movie Culture and Art Center is celebrating its 1st year with themed films this month

To help celebrate its first anniversary, the Jeju Movie Culture and Art Center in Jeju City will be featuring a special selection of movies during November.

The films will fall under six themes: first anniversary replay, grandma’s taking over the screen, their second French movie collection, his autumn romance, the center’s recommendation and Sunday family films. The first anniversary replay will consist of popular movies that had been previously screened at the center like “The Sound of Music,” “Ben-Hur,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Rendezvous.”

From Nov. 18 to Nov. 20, a French film special, under the theme of love, will be played beginning with “Je Vous Trouve Très Beau” (2007). From Nov. 22 to Nov. 26, romance genre movies will be showed.

The Jeju Movie Culture and Art Center was established on Nov. 5, 2010 to energize an older part of Jeju City and to spread movie culture to Jeju locals and visitors. The facility is fully supported by funding from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.

Since its first movie, “Harmony,” (2009) about 520 movies have played at the center, with more than 50,000 visitors, including audiences to its multi-purpose theater. The center regularly provides 10 movies per week. On average, approximately 3,000 audience members visit the center a month.

All movies shown at the center are free and to enjoy a screening is rather easy — simply show up for the movie at the time advertised. However, no snacks or beverages are allowed in the theater.

Unless the film plays at 10:30 a.m., on Thursdays and Fridays and at noon on Sundays, which is for kids, all foreign films will be provided with Korean subtitles.

The center’s representative Jang Jung In listed the center’s three strengths; it’s completely free, shows a wide range of movies, and it provides use of a multi-purpose theater to the public for a relatively inexpensive fee.

“One of our biggest strengths is that we have been listening to the people’s requests,” she said. If you request a movie on its Web site, the center will try to bring that movie to its screen, though, “Due to a limited budget, it is true that we cannot afford to put on newly released movies at the center.”

The center is closed every Monday. For more information, call the Jeju Movie Culture and Arts Center at 064-756-5757, or visit jmoviecenter.blog.me for the screening schedule.  <Jeju Weekly>
