Island to get safer roads made from recycled material

The Jeju Development Institute is implementing eco-friendly roads. As of Feb. 1 a new 6.65 kilometer road made of used tire material and asphalt is being used to test the durability of the newly-suggested porous asphalt pavement technology.

The 22 billion won project is expected to reduce noise pollution and car accidents attributed to hydro-planing.

Ryu Hyun Sung reported in the Associated Press in 1999 that the Korean Ministry of Construction and Transportation had introduced environmentally-friendly pavement technology composed of anti-oxidizer, anti-ultra violet, and carbon-black materials to develop a stronger asphalt combined with used tire rubber.

Jeju Provincial Government Road Department Project Manager Kang Chang Hyo said the porous asphalt provides better drainage on the roads and as a result reduces wear on the surface. Kang said the material for the eco-road is 17 percent more costly than traditional materials.

“Whereas the material cost of general pavement is 69,370 won per ton, that of eco-asphalt pavement is 81,225 won by ton. The lifespan of the general asphalt road is five to 10 years (it's different according to the road condition), and the eco-road of Seosung Ro, from Sumang village to Gasi village, is estimated to last for longer than general asphalt roads.”

Kang said the government chose to build the road in that location since it would help protect the area’s pristine environment, located near Mt. Halla. It also fit the planned length of the test project.

Other locations for eco-friendly roads are being discussed now. Due to the work demand and increased costs, Kang said it is unlikely that Jeju will make all roads eco-friendly at present.

“Many villagers say they are happy because the road is very clean and beautiful. When the weather is good, even some people go there for a walk,” said Sumang village Mayor Park Keum Suk. “Some people think that the road also keeps the noise down to some degree.”   <Jeju Weekly>
