New Year Concert marks Jeju International Airport’s transformation into a ‘culture port’

The “Jeju International Airport’s New Year Concert 2011” was held on Jan. 11 in the second-floor waiting lounge of Jeju International Airport and featured the Jeju Provincial Orchestra.

The concert marked moves by the airport’s administration to turn Jeju airport into a “culture port” during 2011. It will also use the program to encourage people to vote for Jeju as one of the “New 7 Wonders.”

This was the orchestra’s first concert of the year, and they performed without pay. The performance proved very popular as demonstrated by the cheering and applause of its surprised witnesses, who had not expected such a show.

Kim Min Cheol, the Customer Services Team manager of Korea Airports Corporation told The Jeju Weekly, “Jeju airport is a gate of Jeju Island and [an] airport [which] means the start and the end [of a journey] so [it is appropriate that the] Jeju Provincial Orchestra perform their first concert at the airport.”

Jeju International Airport has also held photo exhibitions and campaigns to help starving children in cooperation with World Vision, an international charity. On Jan. 13 to 15, a campaign titled “Hope for Children” was held in the second floor waiting lounge of Jeju International Airport.

Dating from 2009, the campaign hopes to raise about 5 million won in 2011. They plan to use the money raised to dig wells in the Southeast Asia region.

Kim said,“We planned these events to serve the customers of Jeju airport and we try to change Jeju airport into [a] culture port so we will hold many culture events in this year.”  <Jeju Weekly>
