Over 250 students and professors attend festival to learn more about Jeju's water industry

On Dec. 14, The 3rd Jeju Water Festival was held at the Ara Muse Hall and Student Center at Jeju National University (JNU). The festival was hosted and organized by the Jeju Water Industry Center (JWIC), and JNU, and sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

Over 250 students and professors came to learn about the water industry during the half-day festival.

“Today’s event is designed to promote [the] water industry on Jeju and to share ideas related to the field,” said the director of JWIC Lee Seon Joo during her opening speech. The festival was composed of symposiums, student presentations, activities, and performances to maximize student participation.

“The unlimited potential of Jeju water is proven from many different aspects. Now it is time for us to come up with a wide variety of future development strategies for Jeju water and put those strategies into action,” said the president of the JNU Graduate School Chung Choong Duk, reading JNU president’s congratulatory address.

Jeju Water Resources Research Center Director Yang Sung Kee also emphasized the importance of the water industry on the island. “The Korean government is pushing forward with its plan to develop the water industry as one of [the country’s] national strategic industry via the developing [of an] advanced water management project,” said Yang. “Also by 2010, the government is planning to invest about 3.5 trillion won into the industry to raise skillful talents in the field and to target the world’s water market.”
During the opening ceremony, the winners of the new business idea contests were also awarded prizes. Nam Gung Jin, a sophomore at JNU, won the grand prize with an award of 3 million won for his character, “Yongcheoni,” which symbolizes the Jeju magma water. The two second prizes went to two teams, one with the idea of a jelly water beverage also made out of Jeju magma water, and the other for its unique Jeju massage tool made out of Japanese cedar.

Following the opening ceremony, the symposium began. The three sessions covered a wide range of topics related to the water industry. Environmental Engineering Professor Jinren Ni at Peking University discussed the environmental value of water as a natural resource. Professor Lee Hyun Joo at JWIC discussed the future of the Jeju spa industry and its assignments. Boris de Mesones, a researcher for the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation gave a presentation on “The Expectations of Jeju Beer for Students.” Specialists from three different fields and perspectives provided three directions where the water industry on Jeju can move in the near future.

Activities like foot spa treatments, massage trials, and making cosmetic facial mists were provided for participants, in the area outside the lecture hall. Students, especially female students, lined up to make their own facial mists and lip balms.

“We designed this as a part of a water festival to promote cosmetic products made out of natural ingredients and clean water. These days there are many problems with added chemicals,” said activity coordinator Ko Min Young, a graduate student majoring in Aquatic Biomedical Sciences.

The steps were quite simple. The festival committee prepared the ingredients and containers. Participants sat down and measured about 10 ingredients with a scale, mix it, and poured into the container.

“I didn’t know I could make these cosmetic products myself. It was quite entertaining,” said Kim Hyo Jin, a JNU student who visited the booth.

Five foot spa chairs were also prepared for participants which were situated across from the booth.

“I’ve read all the business ideas displayed at the lobby. They all were very creative. My friend made me a facial mist and I’m sitting on a foot spa chair. I can’t complain,” said Park Jung Ah, a senior majoring in Food Bio Engineering at JNU.

The festival ended with performances, including string quartets and local band Anji’s Sound.

Through the half-day festival, a successful JWIC managed to deliver both useful information on water industry, and entertainment to the public.  <Jeju Weekly>
