Starting this Aug. and running through to Dec., the JDC-Jeju Weekly Junior Reporter program will show 30 Jeju middle school students from all over the island the journalism ropes and will allow them to cut their teeth by covering the community they live in.
Having started on Aug. 13 with orientation on the 10th floor of the Venture Maru building in Jeju City Hall, the junior reporter program will consist of a lecture given by Assistant Editor Darryl Coote about a specific topic pertinent to journalism, followed by a field trip where the students will apply what they have learned.
Other teachers include long-time Jeju resident and English teacher Kendra Pugh, staffer Kim Jung Lim and university students Baek Hee Youn and Jung Jung Hoon, who are assisting.
Some of the daily topics slated for the program are media consumption, interview questions, print photography, media research, reporting and writing and so on.
The students will be divided into three groups of 10 and visit some well-know, and some uncommon locations on the island that contain newsworthy qualities ranging from science to sports. They will meet every second and fourth Saturday of the month and are required to write articles with the techniques they have learned.
Students were selected based on their English competency, passion, and interest in Jeju. Having knowledge or interest in pursuing a career in media was considered an asset. The competition ratio was 2:1 with 25 students selected, while five spots were specifically reserved for students of low income families. <Jeju Weekly>
